Generate a strong password with entropy
Build a password from length, symbols and an optional word list. Entropy estimate stays on the device.
Length beats a single “special character” rule. 16+ random characters from a wide alphabet is enough for most accounts. The meter uses zxcvbn-style guesses, not a magic score from a vendor.
Avoid reuse. A unique password plus a manager is the whole protocol. Passphrases from the word list are easier to type; check the entropy if you shorten the phrase.
Generation is local. We do not store the result. Do not paste the password into a screenshot or a ticket. For hashes of files, use the SHA-256 page instead.
A password of 16 characters from a 90-symbol alphabet has far more combinations than 8 letters. Entropy here is a log of that space, not a promise that a site will accept the string. Words from a diceware list are easier to type and still strong if the list is long and the pick is random. Do not reuse the result, and do not add a birth year at the end: that shrinks the guess space. The meter uses zxcvbn-style guesses. This page is the generator. The glossary defines entropy without the sliders.
FAQ
What entropy is enough?
Aim past 60 bits for important accounts. Length and alphabet size drive that number.
Diceware?
The word-list mode is the same idea: several random words beat a short mixed string you will forget.
Is the password uploaded?
No.
