AVIF and WebP are often smaller at the same look. JPEG is safer for email. PNG keeps transparency; photos still usually win as WebP or AVIF.

JPEG quality 80 on a photo often cuts the file by several times and still looks clean at screen size. Quality 40 shows blocks in the sky. WebP and AVIF usually beat JPEG at the same visual size, and older viewers may not open AVIF. PNG compression does not throw away pixels; it only packs them, so a photo saved as PNG stays large.
